Red, Black Vinyl Top Z16

VIN stamped on LH rear frame rail

Interior before restoration. Note ‘67 bench seat shifter.

It appears AM/FM was never out of the dash, although the multiplex unit had been disconnected.

Original speakers and grilles still in rear deck, one even had the insulation box hanging on in the trunk.

This car was purchased by the author in 2002. The previous owner bought it in 1976 and stored it well. It has had one repaint and the original owner had the white upholstery changed to black a short time after purchasing the car. Bought for its’ engine, the fourth owner removed it (he was a race engine builder) and resold the car. A subsequent owner installed the complete engine, transmission and rear axle from a 1967 Chevelle SS 396 that had been wrecked.

This car was sold new in Des Moines, Iowa and was within 30 miles of Des Moines it’s whole life until the 2002 purchase. In Iowa, it remains.

A real IX coded Z16 short block (the serial number is from a different Z16 and will not be restamped) was purchased and has been restored. A body off restoration has recently begun and the car will be completed in just a few months. All restoration work is performed by the author (including paint and upholstery) as a hobby.

The body is extremely solid (especially for an Iowa car) with perfect floor pans and cowl. Unbelievably, the RH fender is rust-free, not being rusted out in the typical lower location. The trunk floor was poor as were the rear quarter wheel openings. These have been replaced with new parts.

Documents for this car include the Special Body Order tag found under the carpet and two partial Body Broadcast copies (build sheets) found in each front fender.

Additional documentation includes copies of all titles since new and notes from an interview  with the original owner, second owner, and third owner. Ironically, the second owner saw the car on the trailer as it was leaving Ames, Iowa after the 2002 purchase. This was revealed during a phone call to him a few days later. He said he saw the trailer with the Z16 and told his wife “that’s my old car!”. He was right!

Photos below are of the car before restoration. Prior to the 2005 restoration, the interior (except for 1965 recovered seats) - including carpet - was untouched, original and in good condition. The door jambs, trunk underside, inside of fenders—all had the original paint in very good condition.

As purchased, Summer, 2002. The old repaint looks pretty shiny in this photo.

Note the holes in the front fender (barley visible) for the 396 “crossed flags” emblem ahead of the wheel and the “Malibu SS” emblem aft of the front wheel.

Outer body rust was very minimal, but the rear quarter wheel opening had been “fixed”. Notice how it is “opened up”. The body shop just cut out the old rusty lip (making the opening bigger) and welded in a 1/8 x 1” piece of strap iron, bending it to fit the opening. This, of course, precluded the use of the wheel opening molding.

This car was never wrecked or apart, but did receive at least three vinyl tops!
