The photo above shows the trim tag from the author’s unrestored, never apart (until now) Z16.

 

Reading from top left:

 

03D = March, 4th week

 

65 = 1965 model year

 

13837 = Malibu SS

 

KAN = Kansas City assembly plant. All Z16s with the exception of the two preproduction prototypes, were assembled in KC. The prototypes were assembled in Baltimore.

 

14629 = Fisher body serial number

 

792 = Malibu SS vinyl bucket seat interior: white seats, white/black door panels, black carpet and dash, white headliner.

 

R-6 = (R)  Regal Red exterior paint, (6) Black vinyl top

 

E = AO1 Tinted Glass.

 

2L = M20 4 speed transmission

 

P = Z13 Back Up Lights. The back up lights were part of the Type A Comfort and Convenience package, Z01, for the 300 and 300 Deluxe Series. The Z01 and Z13 RPOs were identical except for the addition of the remote outside mirror in the Z13 package.

 

N = ?

 

3C = B70 Padded Dash

 

4F = Z13 Comfort and Convenience package Type B. Includes:  Outside Remote Mirror, Inside Non-Glare Mirror, 2 speed electric windshield wipers and washers.

 

M = Z16 SS 396

 

5Y = A49/A47 Belts, Seat : 2 front Custom De Luxe with retractors and 2 rear Custom De Luxe

 

Alpha numeric after the trim tag code (i.e. A01), is the Chevrolet RPO (Regular Production Option) code.

The above accessory codes could appear on any 1965 Chevelle, but only the Z16 received the “M” code in the group 4. The “F” code will always accompany the “M” code since every Z16 had the Comfort and Convenience package.

 

If it is does not say “4FM” on the trim tag, it is not a Kansas City built Z16.
