Red, Red Interior Z16

This car was purchased by Dave Miner in 2005, and then sold to the Editor of this Site in early 2008.  The owner prior to Dave bought it in 1992 and, while he kept it inside, the damage had already been done.  It has just 30,000 original miles on it and was drag raced from at least 1968 until it’s career ended with a “bang”.

The story: A previous owner (early 1970’s?) was racing the car when the clutch exploded (the firewall condition proves this!). He was severely frightened (this is a family web site) and parked the car outside.  The engine and transmission were removed and the car sat behind a shed exposed to the Alabama weather for years.  The engine supposedly went to a machine shop and was subsequently “lost”.  It’s whereabouts are unknown.

Some drag racing evidence: Cut-out inner fenders for fender-well headers.  The carpet jute padding has been removed (carpet is original), as has the heater core and box.  We have the 7” M&H slicks that were used on this car!

While this Z16 has rust in the quarters, trunk, floor pan and bottom of front fenders, it is not as bad as it first appears. Doors are solid and the car is relatively complete. It sports a good bit of its original paint.

The Editor of this Site commenced restoration of this Z16 in the fall of 2008.
Updates to come!

1965 Chevelle big block only right front brake line routing to clear exhaust manifold. Only Z16s had this feature.

160 MPH speedometer showing 30,605 miles

Years of UV exposure has turned red upholstery nearly black. It is (was!) two tone red.

396 “cross flags” and “Malibu SS” emblems on front fender. Only the Z16, of course, received the 396 emblem in 1965 and all other Malibu SS cars had the emblem of that name on the rear quarter.

Only the Z16 received this special chrome on the deck lid and around the lower portion of the taillights. The taillights were borrowed from the 300 series Chevelle for the Z16. A unique “Malibu 396” emblem is on the right side of the trunk.

Big Block motor mounts have a reinforcing rib around the lower and front portions. The small block mounts lack this rib.

Nearly everything is red in the interior including carpet, seats, door panels, dash, dash pad, seat belts and pillar posts. The headliner and sunvisors are white.
